Why Brisbane Needs Ant Pest Control

An ant infestation can become a real problem that’s difficult to deal with on your own. Many ant species have painful bites, making it hard to enjoy your garden. They can also damage plants, dig holes in your lawn, dig up your pavers and cause other harm to your garden. When they get indoors, it’s even more frustrating. They’re often drawn in because it’s a good food source for them and a comfortable environment, and they can build nests in your walls and get into your food. Not to mention the fact that having ants in the house is generally uncomfortable. Many ants that become pests are also invasive species not native to Australia, which can have many negative effects on the native environment so it is best to book a pest inspection in Brisbane sooner rather than later.

There are plenty of products you can buy and home solutions you can use to kill ants, but it’s almost impossible to get rid of a real infestation on your own. As long as the nest is still there and the queen is alive, the ants will keep coming back no matter how many you kill. Plus, a lot of ant sprays and products are potentially dangerous for pets and children, so you want to know what products are the right ones to use. Getting help from a professional for ant control in Brisbane will tackle the root of the issue and ensure that you get a long-lasting and thorough solution that is also as safe as possible for your family and pets.

Ants Have Rights Too, so Why are There Ant Exterminators in Brisbane?

Like almost all creatures on earth, ants serve a useful function. They can help aerate soil, which is good for it, and they can contribute to the decomposition of vegetable matter, making nutrients available for plants in our gardens. So why is there such a thing as an ant exterminator in Brisbane? Because ants can get out of control, that’s why. They come in armies, small but relentless, and they have a tendency to take over, infesting lawns, getting into paving and paths, even climbing trees, and that’s just outside: we certainly don’t want them in the house. Some of them even bite, and nobody likes to be bitten.

For successful ant control it is important to correctly identify the ant species present and if possible, locate the nest.

Our treatments are designed to eliminate the source of the problem by killing the nest. We will use a combination of products to get the best results.

Whether you have ants invading your house, ants digging up dirt between your pavers or biting ants in your lawn, we have a solution.

Indoor ant control treatments

The nature of an indoor ant treatment will depend on whether the nest is somewhere inside the house (such as in the wall void or roof cavity) or whether the ants are coming in from outside. Typically the treatment will include:

  • Application of ant baits in areas of activity
  • Use of perimeter sprays for ants entering from outside
  • Dusts / powders are applied to roof voids / electrical areas

Outdoor ant treatments

Ants around the perimeter of the house and in paved areas require a combination of baits to eliminate the nests and sprays to stop the ants coming inside.

Outdoor ant infestation can be quite severe and may need an ongoing management plan (see note on invasive ants).

Lawn ant control treatments

Lawn ants are generally split into two groups; biting ants (such as the green-head ant) and funnel ants.

Biting ants are generally treated with baits. It may take 1-2 weeks to eliminate green-head ant nests.

To eliminate funnel ants it is necessary to treat all visible funnels with insecticide. When the ants dig into the soil they pick up the insecticide, leading to the elimination of the colony. It can take a week or so for the ants to be eliminated, but as we use long lasting insecticides, the lawn should remain ant free for many months.

How do ant baits work?

Ant baits are crucial for ant treatments as they are designed to eliminate the entire colony.

Ant baits consist of a food attractive to the ants and a slow acting insecticide. Ants feed on the bait taking it back to the nest and pass it on to their nest mates and the queen.

It needs to be slow acting so that it gives the ants time to take it back to the nest and allow it to be spread throughout the colony before they start to feel its effects. As such, it can take 3 days or more for a noticeable drop in ant activity.

As the various ant species have different food preferences, a range of baits are available based on sugar, protein or oil. Pest Doctors have the expertise to select and use the correct bait for the ant species present.

The other challenge in using baits is to ensure enough bait is applied to eliminate all the ants in the colony. For large infestations this can be a significant amount of bait and it may require a follow up visit and second application to deliver complete control.

Specialist ant sprays

We use specialist ant sprays that are slower acting that normal insecticide sprays. Ants cannot detect these “non-repellent” sprays, which means they readily walk across the treated surface picking up insecticide on their bodies. As they are slower acting, this insecticide can be passed to other nest mates which haven’t walked on the treated surface,  magnifying its effect.

An important note on invasive ant infestation

Some of the main pest ant species are invasive ants (not native to Australia). These ants create colonies consisting of multiple nest containing multiple queens and can spread over whole neighbourhoods.

If you are suffering from an ant infestation caused by an invasive ant species, it will be necessary for regular ant treatments to keep the ant numbers down on your property as they will always be present in your neighbours’ yards, ready to re-invade.

How to prevent an ant problem?

Ants often come indoors looking for nutrition so if you remove food sources you will make your home less attractive to ants.

  • Clear up any spilled food
  • Clean down and under the oven / fridge regularly
  • Do not leave unwashed dishes out overnight
  • Do not leave pet food bowls out with food in or unwashed
  • Food should be stored in tight “ant proof” containers
  • Put rubbish into sealed bins and stack away from the house

There is nothing you can do to prevent an outdoor ant problem, except get a professional ant treatment.
